PM Anwar Ibrahim says corruption is his “red line” as government seizes RM15.5 billion from Port Klang smuggling cartels, with prosecutions underway

KOTA KINABALU: The government places high priority on combating corruption, particularly major cases involving billions in national losses, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

He cited decisive action against cartels and smuggling syndicates operating in Port Klang for decades without serious enforcement.

Anwar revealed that after being briefed on smuggling operations, the government launched an aggressive crackdown resulting in RM15.5 billion in seizures and several prosecutions.

“You know, there was a big cartel smuggling goods out of Port Klang… even drug-laden containers left Port Klang and were only intercepted in Australia,” he said at a breakfast programme with Sabah media practitioners.

“I said I could no longer tolerate this. We conducted raids, and the syndicate was powerful… they had inside help and issued threats.”

He commended enforcement agencies for having the courage to take action now that political will exists.

Anwar stressed that all anti-corruption efforts follow strict legal procedures based on solid evidence.

He dismissed claims the unity government abandoned anti-corruption principles by cooperating with parties previously linked to scandals.

The Prime Minister said many online allegations stem from baseless accusations, with legal action only proceeding after MACC investigations establish prosecutable cases.

“Once you are in this office, if there is a compelling case, solid evidence, and grounds for charges, then that is the red line,” he stated.

“But if it is only based on perception, that is different. I do not want my legacy to be one where I claim to fight corruption while enriching myself or my cronies.”

Anwar emphasised that corruption remains his non-negotiable boundary regardless of the individuals involved.

“The country must receive a clear message… we cannot and will not tolerate corruption,” he declared.

He questioned parties defending wealthy individuals involved in major cases due to certain motives.

According to Anwar, corruption has become systemic requiring firm action, improved enforcement and cultural change. – Bernama
