Anwar says MA63 settlement needs parliamentary majority and constitutional review

PM Anwar Ibrahim states MA63 claims require two-thirds parliamentary majority and constitutional consideration, acknowledging unresolved Sabah issues

KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasised that settling Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) claims requires comprehensive constitutional consideration and parliamentary support.

He stated that any MA63 resolution must secure a two-thirds majority in Parliament to proceed effectively.

Anwar acknowledged that several Sabah claims under MA63 remain unresolved but highlighted the MADANI Government’s greater progress compared to previous administrations.

“If you ask about the Sabah claims that have yet to be met, I agree,” he said during a breakfast and “Sembang Santai” programme with Sabah media practitioners.

He questioned which government had conducted more discussions and settled more claims, referencing former leaders.

The Prime Minister stressed that constitutional issues require thorough debate alongside political feasibility.

“Can we secure a two-thirds majority in Parliament? All these factors have to be considered,” Anwar noted.

He balanced Sabah’s demands with constitutional obligations, stating “I hear their concerns, but I also have to consider the Constitution.”

Previously, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof reported that the MADANI Government resolved nine MA63 demands.

The previous government had settled four other MA63 issues according to official reports.

The event was attended by senior media representatives including Sabah Journalists Association president Mariah Doksil and Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.

Also present were Broadcasting Department director-general Datuk Suhaimi Sulaiman and editors from major Sabah publications. – Bernama
