A Malaysian engineer was defrauded of RM27,580 after responding to an online sex service advertisement on TikTok, with police warning of a recurring scam tactic.
KUALA LUMPUR: A 28-year-old engineer was cheated out of RM27,580 in an online sex service scam originating from TikTok.
Brickfields police chief ACP Hoo Chang Hook said the victim was browsing the app at his Bangsar home last Friday when he clicked a link that redirected him to WhatsApp.
He was then offered a package and began dealing with several agents via three different phone numbers.
The victim ultimately made 22 transactions to six different bank accounts, totalling RM27,580.
Initial investigations found the victim was threatened with legal charges if he cancelled the booking.
He was also warned that the matter would be circulated on social media if he refused to follow the syndicate agent’s instructions.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
Hoo said his department had detected several recent reports involving the same modus operandi.
He advised the public not to engage with online sex services.
Apart from violating the law under Section 372B of the Penal Code, he stated individuals are at high risk of becoming fraud victims.
