A 22-year-old Cambodian man has died from H5N1 avian influenza, bringing the country’s death toll from the virus to six this year

PHNOM PENH: A 22-year-old Cambodian man has died from H5N1 avian influenza, according to a Ministry of Health statement.

The National Institute of Public Health confirmed the man tested positive for the H5N1 virus on November 15.

He resided in Kien Khleang village of Chroy Changvar district in the capital Phnom Penh.

Health authorities are investigating the infection source and examining suspected cases and contacts to prevent a community outbreak.

The antiviral drug Tamiflu was distributed to people who had direct contact with the victim.

H5N1 influenza typically spreads between sick poultry but can sometimes transmit to humans.

Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and severe respiratory illness.

The Ministry of Health urged people to remain vigilant and avoid eating ill or dead poultry.
