Proposed Genting Highlands vehicle charges not toll, clarifies minister

Deputy Works Minister says proposed Genting Highlands vehicle charges differ from tolls, with exemptions for workers and residents

KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed charges for vehicles using Jalan Genting Highlands should not be called toll payments, according to Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan.

He clarified these are vehicle charges for a private road owned by the resort operator, not tolls like those collected by Malaysia’s 33 existing toll concessionaires.

Using accurate terminology is crucial to prevent public confusion, he explained during the ministry’s committee-level debate on the Supply (Budget) Bill 2026.

Ahmad suggested the charges should only apply to visitors using the road for recreation, not workers, landowners or area residents.

“What is the effect of the vehicle charges on the operator of Genting Highlands? I suppose if they put too high a price, then fewer people will visit,” he said.

“That’s the risk they have to take.”

He noted tourists could choose alternative destinations without such charges or private roads.

Responding to Datuk Mumtaz Md Nawi (PN-Tumpat), Ahmad said private road vehicle charges fall under state government jurisdiction.

Regulations would involve the relevant municipal council and the Ministry of Housing and Local Government.

Genting Malaysia Berhad previously confirmed vehicle charges for Jalan Genting Highlands would be implemented on an unannounced date.

The Dewan Rakyat approved the ministry’s RM10.69 billion allocation for Budget 2026 through majority voice vote. – Bernama
