Indonesia welcomes UN Security Council adoption of Trump’s Gaza plan, confirms readiness to deploy up to 20,000 peacekeeping troops for stabilisation force
JAKARTA: Indonesia has welcomed the UN Security Council’s adoption of a US-drafted resolution endorsing President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war in Gaza.
The foreign ministry said the resolution establishes an international stabilisation force to support peace efforts.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang emphasised the importance of involving all parties, particularly the Palestinian Authority.
“The resolution prioritises conflict resolution and prolonged peace through the capacity building of the Palestinian authorities,” Yvonne stated.
“Indonesia will always support an independent and sovereign Palestinian nation.”
The Trump administration has been seeking troop contributions from countries including Indonesia and Egypt for the peacekeeping force.
This force would support Gaza’s demilitarisation by decommissioning weapons and destroying military infrastructure.
Indonesia’s defence ministry confirmed last week the country is ready to deploy up to 20,000 troops.
These troops would focus on areas such as health and infrastructure development.
Yvonne did not provide specific details about peacekeeping troop deployments but clarified the resolution’s focus.
She confirmed the resolution emphasises peacekeeping through a UN-mandated international stabilisation force.
President Prabowo Subianto had previously told the UN General Assembly in September of Indonesia’s readiness.
He stated Indonesia was prepared to deploy 20,000 or more peacekeeping troops to Gaza if a UN resolution authorised it.
Israel and Hamas agreed last month to the first phase of Trump’s 20-point Gaza plan.
This agreement includes a ceasefire in their two-year conflict and a hostage-release deal.
The UN resolution provides legitimacy for a transitional governing body in Gaza.
It also reassures countries considering contributing troops to the stabilisation force.
Indonesia advocates for a two-state solution in Palestine and has consistently condemned Israeli violence in Gaza.
The country has been sending humanitarian aid to Gaza and maintains no diplomatic relations with Israel.
Analysts note Prabowo’s foreign policy has shown slight shifts in recent months.
