LKIM prevents monopoly of fish-landing jetties, ensuring fair access for small-scale fishermen through continuous monitoring and cooperation with local authorities.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) prohibits any monopoly or control over fish-landing jetty facilities to guarantee fair access for all fishermen.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said continuous monitoring is conducted through cooperation between state LKIM offices, fishermen’s associations and local authorities.
“LKIM does not permit any party to monopolise fish-landing jetty facilities, such as leasing them to private entities,” he told the Dewan Rakyat.
He was responding to Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng who asked about measures to ensure transparent jetty management that benefits small fishermen.
Mohamad said LKIM manages 48 fisheries complexes and ports nationwide along with 505 traditional fish-landing jetties.
Separately, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security plans to expand closed, high-technology pig farming systems.
The initiative aims to raise pork self-sufficiency to 90% by 2030 through technical assistance and sector transformation.
The Department of Veterinary Services provides advisory services covering farm management and biosecurity practices.
Tax incentives including accelerated capital allowance and income tax exemptions are available until December 2027.
These measures encourage the shift from open farms to closed systems with lower disease risks. – Bernama
