MOT establishes special task forces to investigate Port of Tanjung Pelepas container explosion and Butterworth runaway train incident, reviews KLIA overflow
KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry has established two special task forces to investigate separate incidents at Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Butterworth Station.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced the decision following the ministry’s post-Cabinet meeting today.
He said the move aims to ensure transparent and independent investigations into both cases.
The meeting also reviewed the recent rainwater overflow incident at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1.
The container explosion aboard MV Kyparissia during unloading on November 7 resulted in three fatalities and three injuries.
This task force will examine operational procedures, safety compliance and hazardous cargo handling.
On November 8, an empty commuter train overshot the track end at Platform 4 of Butterworth Station.
That task force will identify the cause and recommend preventive improvements.
Loke confirmed the Land Public Transport Agency has been directed to initiate an investigation paper on the train driver.
Follow-up action will be taken upon completion of the probe.
Regarding KLIA Terminal 1, Loke explained the overflow occurred during waterproofing works by Teras Budi Resources Sdn Bhd.
The contractor holds a RM5.27 million contract running from April 15 this year to April 14, 2026.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd has issued a stop-work order to facilitate internal investigation and immediate rectification.
Firm action will be taken against the contractor for negligence.
Loke emphasised that safety and operational integrity remain the ministry’s top priorities.
He reminded all transport operators to fully comply with safety procedures and ensure continuous maintenance.
