Singapore confirms minor damage to container ship Ever Lovely in the Strait of Hormuz; all 21 crew members unharmed.
SINGAPORE: A Singapore-registered container ship sustained minor damage to the bridge area from an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) confirmed.
In a statement on Friday, MPA said the incident involving the vessel Ever Lovely occurred at about 10 pm Singapore time on Thursday as it was leaving the strategic waterway.
“The vessel has since completed its transit through the Strait of Hormuz and is proceeding on its voyage.
“All 21 crew members are safe. There are no Singaporeans onboard,” MPA said on Friday.
The agency also expressed deep concern over the incident, describing it as unprovoked, unjustifiable and a violation of international law.
“All actions affecting international shipping must fully comply with international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and must not endanger the safety of seafarers or ships at sea.
“MPA will continue to remain in close contact with the vessel’s management company and provide the necessary assistance,” it added.
International media reported that the UN International Maritime Organisation has halted its operation to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz after a vessel was attacked.
