Malaysia and Switzerland renew tax treaty in Putrajaya talks

Malaysia and Switzerland conclude second round of renegotiations to update their 1974 double taxation agreement, aligning with global tax standards.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Ministry of Finance (MOF) and Switzerland’s State Secretariat for International Finance have successfully concluded the second round of renegotiations of the Agreement for the Elimination of Double Taxation with Respect to Taxes on Income between the two countries.

The MOF said in a post on X that the renegotiations were held in Putrajaya from June 22 to 25, 2026.

Malaysia and Switzerland signed the agreement in 1974, which is a bilateral tax treaty that prevents individuals and businesses from being taxed twice on the same cross-border income.

“The agreement clearly allocates taxing rights between the two contracting states, facilitates the exchange of information between the tax authorities, and promotes foreign investment and cross-border trade by providing greater tax certainty and reducing tax-related costs.

“The second round of negotiations followed the first round held in Bern, Switzerland, in December 2025, with the objective of updating the existing agreement in line with current international tax standards, as well as the evolving global economic landscape and business models,” it said.

MOF added that both delegations conducted the negotiations with a strong spirit of cooperation and a shared commitment to achieving a balanced outcome that supports sustainable growth in both Malaysia and Switzerland.

The ministry said Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Johan Mahmood Merican also met with the Malaysian and Swiss delegations to reaffirm the MADANI Government’s commitment to strengthening tax cooperation and the longstanding bilateral relations between the two countries.
