Werwulf trailer teases Robert Eggers’s grim return to period horror.
THE first trailer for Robert Eggers’s new Gothic horror film Werwulf has been released ahead of its Christmas theatrical debut.
The film, set for release on Dec 25, 2026, marks Eggers’s latest return to period horror after Nosferatu (2024). Focus Features is releasing the film in the US, with Universal Pictures handling international distribution.
Werwulf stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe and Lily-Rose Depp, with Ralph Ineson, Jack Morris, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, Jan Bijvoet, Ritchi Edwards and Valeriia Karaman also listed among the cast.

Set in 13th-century England, the film follows a fog-covered countryside where a mysterious creature begins turning local folklore into a terrifying reality for villagers.
Eggers directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Icelandic poet, novelist and screenwriter Sjon, who previously worked with him on The Northman.
The story centres on a cursed farmer played by Taylor-Johnson, while Depp plays his wife and Dafoe appears as a hunter.
Werwulf also reunites Eggers with several past collaborators, including cinematographer Jarin Blaschke and editor Louise Ford. Blaschke has worked with Eggers on The Witch (2015), The Lighthouse (2019) The Northman (2022) and Nosferatu.
The project began production in Britain in 2025, with filming taking place across several locations including Elstree, Surrey, Dartmoor, Gloucestershire and Wales.
Werwulf continues Eggers’s focus on folk belief, religious dread and historical horror, this time through the mythology of the werewolf.
