Sabah minister calls for intensified digital literacy efforts after over 1,200 online threat complaints in east coast region.
TAWAU: Efforts to strengthen digital literacy and raise public awareness must continue to be intensified to better protect users from online threats, Sabah Youth Development, Sports and Creative Economy Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said.
He said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) received 1,232 complaints related to online content, including scams and cyberbullying, from residents on Sabah’s east coast during the first six months of this year.
According to him, the figure formed part of the 3,875 total complaints received in the area up to June.
“The category recorded the second-highest number of complaints after those related to internet network services. These statistics show that efforts to strengthen digital literacy and raise public awareness must continue to be intensified so that more users are able to protect themselves and their families from online threats.
“I welcome MCMC’s approach of bringing the Safe Internet Campaign closer to the community through carnivals such as this in Batu Payung, Tawau,” he told reporters after officiating at the Safe Internet Campaign Carnival here today.
He said the public should exercise greater caution when conducting online transactions, particularly when receiving suspicious offers or being asked to share personal information.
“Do not be easily deceived by offers that seem too good to be true, never share your personal information indiscriminately, and report immediately to the authorities if you become a victim or detect any suspicious activity,” he said.
Nizam said the carnival also provides an opportunity for the public to obtain first-hand information on internet safety through exhibition booths by various agencies, including the Royal Malaysia Police.
