Perak approves RM500,000 for new concrete bridge in Kg Ulu Geruntum

Perak state government allocates RM500,000 for a concrete bridge in Kampung Ulu Geruntum after the main bridge collapsed during a water surge.

IPOH: The Perak state government has approved RM500,000 for the construction of a concrete bridge in Kampung Ulu Geruntum, Gopeng, as a long-term fix after the village’s main bridge collapsed during a water surge on June 19.

State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching said work will commence as soon as ongoing remedial efforts are completed.

“Thank you to all agencies and personnel working tirelessly on the ground. I hope these efforts can be expedited so that the residents of Kampung Ulu Geruntum can return to normal life,” she said in a Facebook statement today.

Sandrea, who is also the Teja assemblyman, said she had approved RM45,000 from her constituency allocation to repair damaged pipes and restore water supply disrupted by the incident.

She added that the state government has also approved an emergency allocation of RM150,000 for a suspension bridge, which is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by mid-July to reconnect the cut-off area.

On June 19, the water surge forced more than 50 residents to evacuate to the Gopeng Town Hall temporary relief centre.

The main bridge linking their settlement was destroyed by strong currents, severing access and leaving residents stranded.
