Viral debate: Is it fair to penalise employees for lateness while employers miss payment deadlines?

A viral workplace post questions why employees face strict discipline for lateness while delayed salary payments are met with leniency, sparking calls for fairness.

A WORKPLACE debate has gained attention online after a viral post highlighted what many employees describe as a double standard between expectations placed on workers and employers’ responsibilities.

The post questioned why employees are often expected to maintain strict discipline and professionalism, while companies are sometimes given more leeway when it comes to fulfilling their basic obligations to employees.

Sharing the sentiment, the post read: “Funny, isn’t it?

“When an employee is five minutes late, their discipline is immediately questioned.

“But when salaries are delayed by hours or even days, employees are told to be understanding.

“Apparently, professionalism only matters when it comes to workers, not when it comes to workers’ rights.”

The post quickly struck a chord with many netizens, with several agreeing that professionalism should be a two-way street between employers and employees.

Many pointed out that while punctuality and accountability are important in the workplace, companies should also uphold their responsibilities by ensuring salaries are paid on time and employees’ rights are respected.

“Exactly. If I’m even one or two minutes late, it already becomes a big issue,” one user called izzah.aniss commented.

“Within one month, I was late for work by one minute several times. It happened five times, and each time I clocked in at 9.01am. Sometimes it was because the clock-in machine was malfunctioning. Then, suddenly, I received a letter saying that I had been late for work more than five times, and they even deducted my salary,” ira.nadiaaaaa wrote.
