The number of flood victims in Melaka continues to climb, with 983 people from 312 families seeking shelter at six temporary relief centres as of morning
MELAKA: The number of flood victims in Melaka continued to rise to 983 people from 312 families as of 8 am today, up from 779 people from 255 families at 9.30 pm yesterday.
The Social Welfare Department’s (JKM) InfoBencana portal said that the victims comprised 642 adults, 322 children and 19 infants.
It added that all the victims have been placed at six temporary relief centres, of which four are in Melaka Tengah and two in Alor Gajah.
In Melaka Tengah, 710 victims from 225 families are being housed at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tanjung Minyak 2 relief centre, while 186 people from 55 families are still sheltering at SK Taman Bukit Rambai.
The number of victims at the Dewan Japerun Pantai Kundor remains at 43 people from 17 families, while 24 people from nine families are staying at the SK Bertam Hulu relief centre.
In the Alor Gajah district, 15 people from five families are sheltering at the Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organisation (Perkim) building in Masjid Tanah, while five people from one family are housed at Balai Raya Kampung Jeram.
Flooding in the two districts occurred following more than six hours of heavy rain yesterday, causing more than 20 areas to be inundated.
