The ISP Golf Tournament brought together 116 plantation professionals nationwide to network and honour the industry’s long-standing golfing tradition.
PETALING JAYA: The plantation community played a pivotal role in the emergence of golf in Malaysia, helping introduce and nurture the sport more than a century ago – a legacy celebrated as 116 golfers gathered for the ISP Golf Tournament, held in conjunction with the 11th International Planters Conference 2026.
Organised by the Incorporated Society of Planters Selangor and Wilayah branch at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Golf and Country Club, the tournament brought together plantation professionals from across the country in what is believed to be one of the largest gatherings of golfers from the industry.
The event saw participation from senior industry leaders, estate managers, agribusiness executives, retirees and young professionals from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, providing a platform for networking, exchanging ideas and strengthening bonds across generations.
ISP Selangor and Wilayah branch acting chairman Dr N. M. Thangaraj said the strong response reflected the plantation industry’s enduring spirit of unity.
“While the tournament recognised excellence on the golf course, its greatest achievement was reaffirming the close-knit relationships and shared sense of purpose that have long distinguished Malaysia’s plantation fraternity.”
He added that the tournament also highlighted a lesser-known chapter of Malaysia’s sporting heritage, in which planters were among the early contributors to the growth of golf in British Malaya.
He said during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, British planters, together with colonial administrators, mining executives and members of the expatriate community, established sporting clubs across plantation districts and administrative centres.
Cricket was often the first organised sport in these communities, with modest grounds serving as social gathering points before many clubs later introduced golf, contributing to the establishment of some of the country’s oldest golf clubs.
“More than 130 years later, the ISP Golf Tournament proudly honours that legacy by bringing today’s plantation fraternity together through a game that generations of planters helped nurture and popularise.”
Thangaraj also expressed his appreciation to the organising committee, led by organising chairman Farid Zainal, together with Dato’ Radin Rosli, Sathianathan, Radzi Saad, Chang Ah Kow, Haji Hamzah and Ramesh Menon, whose commitment and voluntary efforts helped deliver the tournament.
