Kota Damansara data centre issue to go to cabinet

The proposed Kota Damansara data centre development will be brought to the Cabinet after residents raised concerns, says MP Ramanan.

KUALA LUMPUR: The issue surrounding the proposed development of a data centre in a residential area in Kota Damansara will be brought to the Cabinet meeting following concerns raised by residents, said Sungai Buloh Member of Parliament Datuk Seri R. Ramanan.

In a statement today, the Human Resources Minister said the move was decided to discuss the need for more comprehensive guidelines and mechanisms for the placement of data centres, particularly near residential areas.

“I am not against development or investments that can stimulate the country’s economic growth. However, every development must be based on facts, thorough studies, and meaningful engagement with all stakeholders,” he said.

Ramanan said he had also submitted an official objection letter to the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Mayor on Wednesday (July 15) to express his stance on the proposed development.

“However, no official response has been received from MBPJ regarding the objection submitted,” he said.

Ramanan said following complaints from residents, the Sungai Buloh Parliamentary Service Centre had conducted a review and assessment of the proposed development to gain a clearer understanding.

He said preliminary findings indicated several areas requiring attention, including site suitability, community well-being, impact on existing infrastructure and the environment, as well as the residents’ quality of life.

He also stressed that the service centre had never been informed of the proposed development nor involved in any engagement sessions or discussions concerning the interests of Kota Damansara residents.

“Any large-scale development that may impact the local community should be carried out transparently and inclusively, involving all stakeholders, including the area’s elected representative,” he said.

Ramanan said he would continue to monitor developments on the issue and ensure that the voices of Kota Damansara residents are raised at relevant levels until a fair, transparent, and people-centric solution is achieved.

“As the Member of Parliament for Sungai Buloh, the interests of the people will always be my priority,” he said.
