Penang opens one of Southeast Asia’s largest private art galleries, boosting cultural tourism ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
GEORGE TOWN: Penang is strengthening its appeal as a cultural tourism destination with the opening of one of Southeast Asia’s largest private art galleries, offering visitors a compelling reason to venture beyond the state’s famed food outlets and beaches.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery adds a new dimension to Penang’s tourism landscape, enriching the visitor experience in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
“A gallery of this scale and ambition gives people a reason to come to this part of Penang specifically,“ he said when opening the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery Photography Competition exhibition on July 18.
“When more people are arriving, connectivity and hotel supply alone don’t hold their attention.
“What keeps a destination memorable is what it offers beyond that.”
He added that the state has been steadily strengthening its tourism ecosystem through infrastructure development, business events and cultural attractions to ensure Penang remains a competitive destination.
He also said the recent opening of the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre further enhanced the state’s standing as a meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (Mice) destination in northern Malaysia.
“At the same time, the state’s culinary reputation has continued to gain international recognition through the Michelin Guide and China’s Dianping platform.
“That’s the direction I’d like to see our tourism and creative economy efforts keep heading.
“Building the kind of cultural infrastructure that makes the arrival numbers mean something.”
The exhibition features winning and shortlisted entries from the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery Photography Competition 2026, themed Harmony of Art and Architecture.
Held from March 1 to May 31, the competition attracted 155 participants, who submitted 458 entries comprising five photographs each, with a total of 2,290 images.
Offering a total prize pool of RM20,000, the competition saw Lau Wei Yang emerge as champion, winning RM5,000, followed by Tang Pui Sun, winning RM3,000 and Tan Min Yaw, winning RM2,000.
Ten merit prizes of RM500 each and 20 consolation prizes of RM250 each were also presented.
Following several rounds of judging, 33 winners were selected in recognition of their creativity, technical excellence and artistic vision.
Wong said the enthusiastic response reflected growing public interest in exploring art and architecture through photography.
The competition was organised by the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery and co-organised by the Photographic Society of Penang.
The gallery said the initiative aimed to encourage the public to rediscover tranquillity and balance through photography.
Located at the Light Waterfront in Gelugor, the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery opened in December 2025.
Spanning about 8,000sq m, the gallery houses more than 300 representative works by internationally renowned artist Prof Lin Xiang Xiong.
Designed as the world’s first turtle-shaped, over-water art gallery, it has quickly emerged as one of Penang’s newest cultural landmarks, promoting the concept of “Art for Peace” through exhibitions, educational programmes and international collaborations.
The Photography Competition 2026 Exhibition, showcasing the winning and shortlisted entries, is open to the public from July 18 to Aug 18.
Separately, the annual Bon Odori festival was held at the Esplanade on Saturday.
Consul-General of Japan in Penang Machida Shinya said the celebration would further strengthen bilateral ties ahead of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Malaysia next year.
