Xabi Alonso addresses Real Madrid criticism and player relations

Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso responds to recent criticism and player discontent, drawing inspiration from Ancelotti and Mourinho’s experiences

ATHENS: Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso acknowledged he must learn to handle criticism and media speculation about his future at the Spanish giants.

Los Blancos have failed to win any of their last three matches across all competitions amid reports of player dissatisfaction with Alonso’s management methods.

The former Real Madrid midfielder said he draws inspiration from his former coaches Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho, and Manuel Pellegrini.

“It’s demanding, that’s for sure, but I’m sure I’m not the first coach who has had to live with these type of situations,” Alonso told a news conference ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash at Olympiacos.

“I think a lot about how in their days Carlo or Mou handled it, who were the coaches who I was playing under.”

Alonso emphasized the need for self-criticism while admitting dissatisfaction with recent performances.

Madrid began the week seventh in the Champions League phase table after losing to Liverpool at Anfield.

The Spanish giants beat Barcelona in Alonso’s first Clasico in October but subsequently drew with Rayo Vallecano and Elche.

Despite their recent struggles, Madrid remain top of La Liga by one point over reigning champions Barcelona.

Alonso replaced the widely respected man-manager Ancelotti last summer but appears less connected with his players.

Vinicius Junior showed frustration when substituted against Barcelona while Fede Valverde criticized being deployed at right-back.

“I have had to live with a lot of great players and big personalities, who are demanding, professional, and always want the best,” said Alonso.

The coach described such reactions as normal for elite players and acknowledged the challenge of managing top talent.

“That is the fortune of being at Real Madrid, that you have players of that level, and then you have to stay connected with them.” – AFP
