Trump drops deadline for Ukraine-Russia peace deal, says talks progressing

President Trump says there is no firm deadline for a Ukraine-Russia peace agreement, with US negotiators making progress and Moscow offering concessions.

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE: US President Donald Trump has abandoned his Thursday deadline for Ukraine to agree to a US-backed peace plan with Russia.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Florida for Thanksgiving, Trump stated “the deadline for me is when it’s over.”

He confirmed US negotiators are making progress in discussions with both Russia and Ukraine.

Trump revealed Moscow has agreed to some concessions, though he did not provide specific details.

The president said his envoy Steve Witkoff will soon travel to Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump noted his son-in-law Jared Kushner, who helped negotiate the Gaza ceasefire, is also involved in the Ukraine talks.

Trump had previously set Thanksgiving as his target date for Ukraine to agree to a deal ending Russia’s war.

Both he and his aides have since backed away from that firm deadline, instead seeking an agreement as soon as possible.

The president suggested Russia currently holds the upper hand in the conflict.

Trump stated it would be in Ukraine’s best interests to reach an agreement promptly.

He indicated some Ukrainian territory “might be gotten by Russia anyway” over the coming months.

Security guarantees for Ukraine are being negotiated with European partners, according to Trump.

A US-based framework for ending the war, first reported last week, had raised concerns about potential bias toward Moscow. – Reuters
