Mercy Malaysia expands flood response as tropical storm hits
KUALA LUMPUR: Mercy Malaysia has expanded its emergency response as Tropical Storm Senyar impacts multiple states along the west coast.
The storm, detected entering the Straits of Malacca, marks the first such occurrence recorded by the Malaysian Meteorological Department in the area.
The organisation is scaling up mobile health services, water and sanitation interventions, and psychosocial support across affected areas.
It will also deliver essential non-food items to communities in need during this emergency period.
President Datuk Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus said the storm’s impact alongside ongoing monsoon flooding reflects a changing climate reality reshaping disaster risk.
“Our response goes beyond immediate relief to reinforcing systems, partnerships and community resilience,” he stated.
Mercy Malaysia remains committed to coordinated humanitarian action that protects lives and preserves dignity.
The storm has brought strong winds of up to 50 kilometres per hour, well above Malaysia’s usual range of 10 to 20 km/h.
These conditions create heightened risks of flooding and coastal hazards along the west coast.
Operations continue across Kelantan, Perlis, Perak and Selangor where communities face combined impacts of monsoon rains and rising floodwaters.
Teams are monitoring the situation in Terengganu and stand ready to deploy if needed.
Since November 25, Mercy Malaysia teams have conducted rapid needs assessments and distributed essential relief supplies.
They have provided mobile medical services and delivered Psychological First Aid in affected communities and evacuation centres.
Child-Friendly Activities are implemented to support children during displacement as part of integrated psychosocial support.
Special attention remains focused on vulnerable groups including children, older persons, and individuals with chronic illnesses.
The organisation called for sustained collective action to support communities impacted by floods and extreme weather.
