Foreigners in KLIA passport check had valid documents, says minister

Home Minister confirms two foreigners in viral KLIA passport video entered Malaysia legally with valid passports, investigation ongoing into motive.

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has confirmed that two foreigners featured in a viral passport inspection video at Kuala Lumpur International Airport entered and exited Malaysia legally.

He stated that thorough checks revealed both individuals – a Bosnian and a Chinese national – possessed valid travel documents.

“We have also checked with their respective embassies,” Saifuddin told reporters after the handover ceremony of the Malaysian Societies Registration Department’s 2025 MADANI Adoption Village Project in Kampung Sindang Baru.

“All records have been confirmed including their entry records, the entry point used, and that the travel documents are indeed valid.”

The minister clarified that the inspection shown in the video was conducted by auxiliary police at the check-in counter, not by immigration officers.

Saifuddin did not rule out the possibility that the two tourists knew each other and confirmed investigations are underway to determine their motive for the incident.

“But whatever it is, we will investigate his motive, whether it is to tarnish the country’s image in relation to security issues,” he said.

The minister suggested the video might have been created for social media content, noting similar incidents have occurred in other countries like Thailand.

“If we see cases like this continuing, of course we can take action against the individual according to existing laws.”

The viral video showed a foreigner’s passport being inspected by what appeared to be airline security personnel at KLIA2.

Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said last Thursday that his department was identifying the TikTok account owner involved and might call in airline staff to assist investigations. – Bernama
