RM15 million approved for new Melaka Sentral market reconstruction

RM15 million allocated to rebuild Pasar Besar Melaka Sentral as modern single-storey market with 330 trader lots, completion expected by 2028

MELAKA: The Housing and Local Government Ministry has approved RM15 million for reconstructing Pasar Besar Melaka Sentral at its original site beside Melaka Sentral Terminal.

Melaka Historic City Council mayor Datuk Shadan Othman said tenders will be called in April or May 2025 with construction expected to take two years.

Completion is scheduled for 2028 with the new market designed under the ‘Serambi Melaka’ concept.

“The construction of Pasar Besar Melaka Sentral will involve only a single-storey building, compared to the old two-storey structure, to make it easier for traders and visitors, especially the elderly,” he told reporters.

Shadan confirmed the site underwent technical checks addressing previous land subsidence concerns.

“The soil structure has been assessed and confirmed safe for construction,” he said.

The old market was demolished after 2016 land subsidence rendered the building unsafe according to the Malaysian Public Works Institute.

Traders have been operating from a temporary site in Bachang since the market’s closure. – Bernama

The model, officially named the Defender Dakar D7X-R, will compete in the “Stock” category and will be led by 14-time Dakar champion Stéphane Peterhansel, who takes on driving duties for the team.Although the D7X-R is based on the already formidable Defender Octa, the rally variant has been pushed even further within the limits allowed by competition regulations. The body structure has been reinforced, cooling has been improved to cope with the extreme desert heat, and additional underbody protection has been fitted to cope with continuous impact and rough terrain.
