Malaysia aims for top 15 spot in global public service ranking

Malaysia targets a top 15 position in the International Public Service Index, aiming to match South Korea through a new reform agenda

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is targeting a leap into the top 15 of the International Public Service Index.

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the target aligns with efforts to transform the nation’s administrative machinery.

He stated the goal ensures the country’s public service is efficient and globally recognised, in line with the MADANI Government’s reform agenda.

“Based on the Blavatnik Index released by Oxford University, Malaysia is currently ranked 40th,” he said on RTM’s ‘Bicara Naratif’ programme.

“I have told the Prime Minister that during my tenure, I will try to bring Malaysia at least on par with South Korea at number 15.”

He said achieving the goal requires a paradigm shift among civil servants to understand public sentiment.

To drive reform, the government has launched the Public Service Reform Agenda focusing on five main thrusts.

The thrusts cover values, governance, human capital development, service delivery, and public-private synergy.

As proof of commitment, a mega programme “Rancakkan MADANI Bersama Malaysiaku” will be held in Putrajaya from December 5 to 7.

The programme marks the third anniversary of the Unity Government administration.

This year’s event focuses on three key objectives for evaluating progress and strengthening collaboration.

It aims to showcase the progress of the reform agenda and the Special Task Force on Agency Reform.

Another objective is strengthening the culture of performance, integrity and empathy in the public service.

The programme also seeks to enhance collaboration between the government, private sector and the people.

“The phrase ‘Bersama Malaysiaku’ reflects that no one is left behind,” Shamsul Azri said.

“It encompasses all segments of society—from children to youths, to workers and senior citizens.”

In conjunction with the event, the National Public Service Reform Convention will be held.

The convention will feature five forum sessions discussing critical issues including bureaucratic reforms.

Shamsul Azri said such initiatives provide clarity on ongoing reform efforts aimed at achieving the global target. – Bernama
