Three Malaysians safe after Sumatra floods, two still missing

Three Malaysians are safe after Sumatra floods, but two remain missing as search efforts continue in West Sumatra and Aceh

KUALA LUMPUR: The Foreign Ministry continues to monitor the situation for Malaysians affected by severe floods and landslides in parts of Sumatra.

It confirmed three Malaysians, aged between 63 and 64, previously uncontactable since November 27, have been safely located and evacuated.

The individuals were flown by the Indonesian Air Force from Rembele Airport in Takengon to Medan, arriving at Kualanamu Airport yesterday evening.

The Consulate General in Medan is now arranging their return to Malaysia as soon as possible.

However, a 64-year-old Malaysian woman remains uncontactable, with efforts to trace her ongoing.

“Malaysians with information that may assist in establishing her location are urged to contact the Consulate General immediately,” the ministry stressed.

Search and rescue operations also continue for a 30-year-old Malaysian, Asrul Nizam Apridwson, reported missing in a landslide in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, on November 27.

The seventh-day operations are focused on riverbanks and landslide zones near Jambatan Kembar.

“The Consulate General remains in close coordination with Indonesian authorities and continues to provide support to the family,” the statement read.

The ministry advised Malaysians in affected areas of North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh to exercise extreme caution and follow local guidance.

Families unable to contact relatives in the affected areas are urged to contact the Consulate General of Malaysia in Medan for assistance.

The Consulate General can be contacted via a 24-hour hotline at +62 823-6164-6046 or by email at [email protected]. – Bernama
