Kelantan customs seized smuggled cigarettes worth over RM300,000 and detained 10 suspects in a statewide operation targeting hidden storage locations
KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan Customs Department has detained 10 individuals and seized smuggled cigarettes worth RM315,708 in a statewide operation.
Director Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long said Operation Loging was conducted from November 10 to 13 across 16 separate locations.
Inspections led to the seizure of smuggled cigarettes with a market value of RM73,062.36.
The estimated unpaid duties and taxes on the goods amounted to RM242,646.39.
“The syndicate is believed to have hidden the cigarettes behind counters, in hidden storage spaces, and abandoned houses before selling and distributing them,” Wan Jamal said.
The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
First-time offenders convicted under this section face a fine of 10 to 20 times the goods’ value or between RM100,000 and RM500,000.
They also risk imprisonment for up to five years, or both penalties.
Wan Jamal urged the public to help combat smuggling activities involving cigarettes, liquor, firecrackers, drugs, and vehicles.
He said such activities cause losses in national revenue and threaten public safety and well-being.
