The 2027 SEA Games will be held in Sarawak, Penang, Johor and Kuala Lumpur from Sept 18-29, featuring 38 sports, with the ASEAN Para Games to follow
MALAYSIA will host the 34th SEA Games from September 18 to 29, 2027, across four main clusters in Sarawak, Penang, Johor and Kuala Lumpur.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said the event will feature 38 sports selected in line with Southeast Asian Games Federation stipulations and venue suitability.
“The dates were actually chosen because that’s the holiday season for universities,” she told a media conference after an organising committee meeting.
She added the period avoids the monsoon season and major national celebrations like National Day and Malaysia Day.
Sarawak will serve as the main cluster and host the opening ceremony, featuring 17 sports including aquatics, weightlifting and e-Sports.
The Penang cluster will host six sports, including sepak takraw and boxing, while Johor will host only football.
Kuala Lumpur will host the closing ceremony and 14 sports, such as badminton, athletics and hockey.
The Olympic Council of Malaysia and the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee will present the sports proposal to the SEAGF in Bangkok on Monday.
Meanwhile, the 14th ASEAN Para Games is scheduled for October 17-23, 2027, in Kuala Lumpur, involving 18 sports.
OCM president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria praised the government for agreeing to host the prestigious biennial Games.
He noted the final decision on sports can be made 20 months before the opening ceremony in September 2027.
An official logo and mascot design competition for both Games has been opened to all Malaysians.
The first-place winner will receive RM8,000, with entries closing on December 31. – Bernama
