Gnabry and Karl lead Bayern Munich comeback win over Sporting

Bayern Munich came from behind to beat Sporting Lisbon 3-1 in the Champions League, with Serge Gnabry and teenager Lennart Karl on target

MUNICH: Bayern Munich staged a second-half comeback to defeat Sporting Lisbon 3-1 in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.

The German champions fell behind after Joshua Kimmich scored an own goal in the 54th minute.

Serge Gnabry equalised for Bayern by tapping in a Michael Olise corner just four minutes later.

Teenage forward Lennart Karl then completed the turnaround, firing home on the turn to make it 2-1.

Gnabry turned provider for the third goal, heading a Kimmich cross into the path of Jonathan Tah to seal a 3-1 victory.

“We stayed calm,” Bayern coach Vincent Kompany told broadcaster DAZN after the match.

The win lifts Bayern to second in the league phase standings, behind Arsenal on goal difference.

Karl, aged 17, became the youngest player to score in three consecutive Champions League matches.

“I’m proud of myself — and of the team,” Karl said.

Bayern made seven changes to the team that beat Stuttgart last weekend, recalling Harry Kane and Manuel Neuer.

Kane hit the post in the first half, while Karl had an early goal ruled out for offside.

Sporting remain ninth in the 36-team table despite the defeat. – AFP
