Malaysia drafts national SAF strategy, eyes 2027 cabinet approval

Malaysia’s national SAF strategy is in development, with a blending mandate proposed to start at 1% and cabinet approval targeted for early 2027

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is drafting a National Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Strategy Document following extensive industry consultations.

Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities Datuk Chan Foong Hin said the document is being developed jointly with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry.

He stated the strategy is currently at the preliminary discussion stage before further action is taken.

“The document is expected to be finalised after taking into account all factors, including production, demand, technological developments, and the implementation of SAF mandates by neighbouring countries,” Chan said in the Dewan Negara.

Further discussions with MITI are scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.

Drafting and review of the final document will then continue until the end of 2026.

The strategy is targeted for presentation to the Cabinet in early 2027.

Chan was responding to a question from Senator Che Alias Hamid regarding the timeline for finalising the national SAF strategy.

The government aims to support Malaysia’s goal of becoming a leading global SAF producer.

Authorities are also formulating the introduction of an SAF blending mandate to stimulate demand.

“The introduction of the SAF blending mandate will be proposed to begin at one per cent and will be increased progressively according to suitability and need,” Chan added. – Bernama
