National men’s 5S hockey team wins the nation’s first 2025 SEA Games gold, defeating Indonesia 7-3 in the event’s debut at the biennial Games.

MALAYSIA secured its first gold medal of the 2025 SEA Games today with a commanding 7-3 victory over Indonesia in the men’s five-a-side hockey final.

The win marks a historic moment as 5S hockey made its debut at the biennial Games.

Malaysia dominated from the start, building a 3-0 lead in the first period through goals from Mohamad Akhimullah Anuar Esook, Muhammad Abid Sufian Mat Ruslee and Luqman Nul Hakim Ahmad Shukran.

The team extended its lead in the second half with four more goals to seal the comprehensive win.

Akhimullah completed a hat-trick with two more goals, while Abid scored again and Shafiq Ikhmal Daniel Suzaini added a last-minute strike.

Indonesia managed three consolation goals from Mochamad Fathur and a quick brace from Alfandy Prastyo.

National head coach Wan Roslan Wan Abdul Rahman expressed immense pride in his team’s historic achievement.

“Alhamdulillah, very proud that 5S hockey contributed a gold medal and that we made history as this is the first time the event is held at the SEA Games,” he said.

He credited the team’s success to the blend of experienced World Cup players guiding the newer members of the squad.

Malaysia entered the final brimming with confidence after a perfect run through the tournament.

The team swept the round robin stage with wins over Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand before defeating the Philippines again in the semifinal.

In related news, the Malaysian women’s 5S hockey team had to settle for a silver medal after losing 1-7 to Thailand in their final.
