Malaysia proposes new ASEAN council to boost rural development

Malaysia proposes creating an ASEAN Rural Development and Innovation Council to coordinate policies and share technology across Southeast Asia.

BANGKOK: Malaysia has proposed the creation of a new ASEAN Rural Development and Innovation Council (ARDIC).

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said ARDIC would serve as a permanent platform to coordinate policies and share innovations.

“ARDIC is expected to be a key driver in enhancing the exchange of technology, best practices, and expertise among all 11 ASEAN nations,” he said.

He added that Malaysia wished for ASEAN’s prosperity to be shared through experience among member countries.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, said Malaysia would celebrate a Rural Development Day in July next year.

He said the nation would continue to focus on rural development through innovation, digitalisation, and expanding TVET programmes.

The ministry remains committed to ensuring rural communities benefit from regional development towards ASEAN 2045.

Ahmad Zahid also outlined major ongoing investments in rural infrastructure.

This includes RM2.3 billion for 1,364 road projects and RM195.2 million to provide clean water to 5,000 homes.

Other investments are RM159.47 million for a stable power supply and RM364.45 million through a housing programme.

Efforts to enhance rural socioeconomics will continue through support for 55,400 entrepreneurs.

Two Malaysian organisations received an ASEAN Leadership Award at the meeting for their contributions.
