MCMC allocates RM310 million to develop Melaka’s smart city infrastructure, including fibre optics and public Wi-Fi, for digital heritage transformation.
MELAKA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has allocated RM310 million to develop connectivity infrastructure for the Melaka Smart City initiative.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the funding supports the state’s goal of becoming a digital heritage city.
He said MCMC has held discussions to help implement the Smart Melaka 2035 blueprint for sustainable development.
Fahmi was speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Melaka government and MCMC.
The MoU was signed by MCMC chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and state secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad.
It was witnessed by Fahmi and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.
Key initiatives include developing smart connectivity infrastructure and improving public safety through a Network Operation and Command Centre.
Other plans involve smart heritage tourism management and flood initiatives using IoT sensors.
“Smart connectivity infrastructure provides a strong foundation for a smart city,” said Fahmi.
This includes fibre-optic networks, smart poles and public Wi-Fi to improve internet access statewide.
He said the effort stimulates the local digital economy and supports tourism, retail, logistics and SMEs.
It also aims to create a more conducive environment for investment.
Speaking at a press conference, Fahmi said the state government has clear direction in digitising public services.
“The foundation of these digital services is the digital infrastructure itself,” he stated.
He noted this project covers the entire state, not just urban areas, to benefit all residents.
“I believe we will be able to launch the first phase within the first six months of next year,” Fahmi added.
