PlanMalaysia pushes public engagement for Urban Renewal Act approval

PlanMalaysia intensifies public dialogues to fast-track the Urban Renewal Act, focusing on safety in ageing urban areas and sustainable development

LABUAN: The Town and Country Planning Department (PlanMalaysia) is ramping up public engagement to expedite approval of the Urban Renewal Act.

Director-General Datuk Dr Alias Rameli said dialogue sessions aim to secure broad support for the crucial legislation.

“Urban renewal is not merely a development necessity, but a moral responsibility of the government to protect residents’ safety,” he stated at the Labuan World Town Planning Day 2025 celebration.

He stressed the urgent need to safeguard communities living in old and unsafe structures.

Alias emphasised that involving all societal segments is key to ensuring the Act is approved in a dignified and implementable manner.

This year’s planning day theme focuses on strengthening urban resilience against urbanisation and climate change.

Alias said cities like Labuan must achieve high readiness to ensure long-term sustainability.

The Labuan Structure Plan 2040 is significant for charting the federal territory’s new growth trajectory.

Development projects like the Labuan Waterfront Phase One support urban regeneration efforts.

These initiatives aim to create investment opportunities and enhance the city’s image.

Labuan Corporation CEO Mohd Sukuran Taib highlighted the CHASE city concept as a core planning inspiration.

CHASE stands for Clean, Healthy, Advanced, Safe and Eco-friendly city development.

Current planning focuses on improving landscape aesthetics and advancing smart city initiatives.

Mohd Sukuran said urban planning should reflect public aspirations and ensure social inclusivity.

He called for a more open, collaborative and responsive planning culture.

Feedback from the celebration will help strengthen policies under the Labuan Structure Plan 2040.

The input will also inform the Draft Labuan Local Plan 2040 for future development. – Bernama
