Flood evacuee numbers rise in Terengganu as Sarawak situation eases

Flood evacuees in Terengganu increase to 299, while numbers in Sarawak decline to 18. Several rivers exceed danger levels, with thunderstorms forecast

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of flood evacuees in Terengganu has increased this morning while the situation in Sarawak continues to improve.

In Terengganu, 299 people from 78 families are now at relief centres, up from 53 individuals from 18 families last night.

The Terengganu State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) Secretariat said Kemaman is the latest affected district, with 108 evacuees at the Dewan Sivik Bukit Kuang centre.

In Hulu Terengganu, 191 people from 58 families have been relocated to four separate relief centres.

Data shows the Sungai Besut station at Jambatan Keruak has exceeded its danger level.

The Sungai Kemaman and Sungai Dungun stations have also surpassed their warning levels.

In Sarawak, the number of evacuees has declined to 18 people from nine families across two centres in Miri.

The Sarawak JPBN reported the Sekolah Kebangsaan Suai, Niah centre now houses 10 people, down from 21.

The Dewan Bulan Sabit Merah Miri centre is still accommodating four flood evacuees and four people affected by a landslide.

Several river stations in Miri remain above warning levels, with the Long Teru station exceeding its danger mark.

The water level at Long Teru was recorded at 8.52 metres against a danger level of 8.0 metres, with a rising trend.

In Marudi, the water level stands at 3.7 metres, exceeding the danger mark of 3.25 metres but holding steady.

Separately, MetMalaysia has issued a thunderstorm warning for several states until 1.00 pm today.

The warning covers Kedah, Penang, Perak, Pahang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Sabah, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

Thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds are forecast for specific areas within these states. – Bernama
