Sabah assemblyman calls for Starlink expansion in rural areas

Kuamut rep proposes expanding Starlink satellite internet to all villages in Sabah to bridge the digital divide for students and rural communities

KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah assemblyman has proposed expanding Starlink satellite internet services to all rural and interior villages in the state.

Datuk Masiung Banah (GRS-Kuamut) said the Communications Ministry’s initiative has significantly impacted communities, especially students facing limited internet access.

“We therefore urge the minister to expand the programme and, if possible, ensure that every village is equipped with Starlink satellite internet facilities,” he said during the debate on the Sabah Supply Bill 2026.

He argued that wider publicity and extension of the programme would greatly benefit students in gaining internet access.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has already installed Starlink devices in several remote locations.

These include two sites each in Papar, Keningau and Tawau, and one each in Kudat, Ranau, Tuaran and Nabawan.

Masiung also commended the state government’s new policies on human capital, education aid and housing.

He stressed the need for more efficient implementation at the departmental and agency levels.

The assemblyman emphasised expediting programmes like the RM200 education assistance for Form Five and Six students.

He also urged the government to explore new mineral resources like gold, coal and rare earth elements as long-term economic catalysts.

Masiung called for hastening the establishment of a special committee to formulate a mechanism for claiming Sabah’s 40% revenue entitlement.

“We want to see our state progress, remain peaceful and enjoy political stability,” he said while expressing support for the Sabah Budget 2026. – Bernama
