Anwar’s Kenya visit cements six decades of diplomatic ties

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s recent visit to Kenya has strengthened mutual trust and political goodwill as both nations mark 60 years of diplomatic relations.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent visit to Kenya has reinforced trust and political goodwill between the two nations.

The visit coincides with the celebration of six decades of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Kenya.

Kenyan High Commissioner to Malaysia Ekitela Moru said the long-standing partnership marks a historic milestone.

He noted it is reflected in shared values and growing political, economic, trade, investment, and people-to-people ties.

“This partnership is not just symbolic, but it provides an opportunity to deepen cooperation in key priority areas,” Moru said on Bernama TV’s programme The Nation.

He listed trade, investment, ICT, the digital economy, education, and tourism as key areas for collaboration.

Moru highlighted the complementary strengths of both countries, with Kenya as a gateway to Africa and Malaysia as a Southeast Asian hub.

He stated Kenya is committed to pursuing inclusive development, citing Malaysia’s cultural values and development trajectory as a role model.

“We like following the footsteps of Malaysia in terms of development,” Moru said.

He added Kenya is working on poverty alleviation and inclusive growth for its people.

Malaysia’s experience in poverty reduction and large-scale affordable housing has inspired Kenya.

Moru said this has prompted Kenya to strengthen its social protection measures, public-private partnerships, and inclusive development policies.

Anwar visited Nairobi on November 23 and 24, marking the first official trip by a Malaysian Prime Minister to Kenya since 2007.

During the visit, both countries agreed to explore partnerships and investments, including collaboration in STEM.

They also upgraded their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership.
