Australian spinner Nathan Lyon moves to sixth on the all-time wicket-takers list, passing Glenn McGrath during the third Ashes Test in Adelaide
AUSTRALIAN off-spinner Nathan Lyon has moved past Glenn McGrath into sixth place on the all-time list of Test wicket-takers.
The 38-year-old claimed his 564th career wicket by bowling England’s Ben Duckett on day two of the third Ashes Test.
Lyon achieved the milestone in his 141st Test match, taking two wickets in a sensational opening over that also dismissed Ollie Pope.
The spinner now has England’s Stuart Broad, with 604 wickets, and India’s Anil Kumble, with 619, in his sights.
The all-time leading wicket-taker remains Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan with 800, followed by Australian Shane Warne (708) and England’s James Anderson (704).
Lyon recently said he is in some of the best form of his life and has no plans to retire.
His longevity is partly attributed to focusing solely on Test cricket since 2019, having not played international white-ball cricket.
Affectionately nicknamed “Garry” after former Australian rules footballer Garry Lyon, he made his Test debut in 2011.
His best bowling figures in an innings are 8 for 50. – AFP
