National icon Dr M. Jegathesan says events honouring former Olympians are vital for inspiring the next generation of Malaysian athletes.
NATIONAL athletics icon Tan Sri Dr M. Jegathesan said events honouring former Olympians provide a vital platform to inspire the younger generation.
Speaking at a Christmas luncheon for Olympians organised by the Royal Selangor Club Darts Section, Dr Jegathesan said such occasions remain deeply meaningful.
“We are very happy that people are still recognising us even after so many years have passed,” he told Bernama.
He emphasised that these gatherings allow former athletes to reconnect with their sporting journeys.
Dr Jegathesan, nicknamed ‘The Flying Doctor’, said he hopes the recognition will inspire younger athletes to look forward to competing.
He highlighted the importance of competing at the international level for shaping national pride and character.
“Participating at a high level in sports teaches you a lot about dedication, discipline and the pride of representing your country,” he said.
Dr Jegathesan described the unique pride of standing on a podium as the national anthem plays.
“Only those who have experienced it can truly understand how proud they feel,” he added.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Olympians Association president Noraseela Mohd Khalid thanked organisations that honour Olympians.
She said former Olympians remain ready to support sports development in the country.
“We are deeply touched that there are still those who value and recognise our contributions,” Noraseela said.
She expressed hope that sports bodies and ministries would reach out to utilise their experience.
“We genuinely want to contribute,” she stated.
RSC president Rizal Edi Effendi Sahbudin said the luncheon reflected the club’s commitment to sports development and nation-building. – Bernama
