Malaysia’s pineapple board targets commercialisation and innovation in new plan

LPNM shifts focus to commercialising high-value pineapple products under 13MP, with RM288 million to expand plantations and boost downstream industry.

JOHOR BAHRU: The Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) will prioritise commercialisation and innovation in the downstream sector under the 13th Malaysia Plan.

Deputy director-general Linda Buang said the 13MP marks a strategic shift from the research focus of the previous plan to widespread industrial adoption.

“During the 12MP, LPNM focused on developing applications based on foundational research, while the 13MP will advance these to pre-commercial and commercial stages,” she told Bernama.

She highlighted that 17 product development studies were completed during the 12MP, with about 30% already in the commercialisation phase.

Products under development include animal feed from waste, cosmetics, textiles from leaves, leather, and various food and pharmaceutical items.

New technologies like shredders and fibre production machines are also being worked on.

Linda said research topics are selected by a committee for commercial viability and market potential.

“This ensures the research delivers a tangible impact for growers, helping to expand the value chain,” she added.

LPNM is running a Transfer of Technology programme involving over 1,000 participants nationwide from 2021 to 2025.

Linda pointed out that every part of the pineapple plant holds potential for high-value products.

“The concept of three harvests – fruit, sprout, and waste – can significantly increase farmer income,” she said.

To support commercialisation, LPNM plans promotional campaigns including participation in MAHA 2026.

It also intends to organise an Innovation Day in mid-2026 to showcase university-developed products.

Efforts are being made to increase pineapple plantation areas, with a target of 30,000 hectares by 2030.

This expansion will focus on Sarawak and aims to boost productivity from 43,000 to 70,000 plants per hectare.

Linda added that the government has approved an allocation of RM288 million for LPNM under the 13MP.

“This funding will strengthen the entire industry value chain,” she said.

She stated the 13MP is a critical phase to advance Malaysia’s pineapple industry to be more sustainable and competitive.
