Spurs captain Cristian Romero could receive a longer suspension after being charged by the FA for failing to leave the pitch promptly and aggressive behaviour.
TOTTENHAM Hotspur captain Cristian Romero could face an extended suspension after being charged by England’s Football Association.
The FA charged the defender with failing to leave the field promptly and acting in an “aggressive” manner following his red card against Liverpool last Saturday.
Romero received a second yellow card for kicking out at Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate before referee John Brooks ordered him off during a 2-1 defeat.
His dismissal left Spurs with nine men after Xavi Simons was shown a red card for serious foul play in the first half.
The Argentina centre-back was initially booked for dissent after complaining he was pushed by Hugo Ekitike for Liverpool’s second goal.
The standard red card means Romero will serve a one-match ban, missing Sunday’s match away to Crystal Palace.
He now faces additional punishment and a longer ban if found guilty by the FA.
Romero has until January 2 to respond to the charge issued on Wednesday.
“It’s alleged that he acted in an improper manner by failing to promptly leave the field of play and/or behaving in a confrontational and/or aggressive manner towards the match referee after being sent off,” an FA statement said.
Spurs travel to Brentford on New Year’s Day before hosting Sunderland on January 4 and visiting Bournemouth three days later.
Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank criticised referee Brooks for failing in his duties regarding Romero’s sending off.
“There is a massive mistake by John on the pitch,” said Frank.
“Two hands on the back by Ekitike. I don’t understand how he didn’t see it.”
The Danish boss added that if the referee had done his job, Romero would not have received his first yellow card.
Defeat left Spurs 14th in the Premier League table, increasing pressure on Frank after he took charge in June.
