Liverpool and Wolves to honour Diogo Jota in Anfield tribute

Liverpool manager Arne Slot hopes Diogo Jota’s family finds solace as his former clubs meet for the first time since the forward’s tragic death.

LONDON: Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed hope that Diogo Jota’s family can find some comfort as his two former English clubs prepare to meet.

The Portugal forward, along with his brother Andre Silva, was killed in a car crash in Spain on July 3.

Jota’s two sons are expected to accompany the mascots for Saturday’s Premier League match between Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.

In his matchday programme notes, Slot reflected on a year that “ignites a roller coaster of emotions”.

“Doing so leads me to think especially of the family of Diogo Jota on what will be their first Christmas without him,” Slot said.

“It is not my place to tell them where they should look for comfort – if that is even possible – but I can only hope that the feeling of love and affection that Diogo still generates brings them some solace.”

Slot acknowledged the profound sense of loss surrounding the fixture, the first between the clubs since Jota’s passing.

“The sense of loss will be particularly strong on Saturday, of course, as it will be the first time that Diogo’s two English teams will meet since his tragic passing,” he added.

“Like us, Wolves were clearly very affected by the loss of such a special player and person so my thoughts continue to be with them also.”

Jota enjoyed a successful spell at Wolves before moving to Liverpool in 2020.
