SWCorp issues 42 littering notices in New Year’s Eve crackdown

SWCorp issued 42 littering notices during New Year’s Eve operations, with offenders facing fines up to RM2,000 and potential community service orders.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) issued 42 Notices of Offence Notification during a New Year’s Eve enforcement operation.

The operation, Ops Cegah, targeted littering at 11 major hotspot locations in states that have adopted the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007.

Of the total offenders, 24 were Malaysian citizens and 18 were foreign nationals.

The offences involved discarding items like cigarette butts, plastic bottles and food wrappers in public places.

“All offenders will be investigated and brought to court for further action in accordance with the provisions of the law in force,” SWCorp said in a statement.

The offence carries a maximum fine of RM2,000 upon conviction.

The court may also impose a Community Service Order for up to six months.

SWCorp chief executive officer Khalid Mohamed stressed that Ops Cegah is not a seasonal initiative.

He said it will be conducted consistently through ongoing monitoring.

The integrated operation involved SWCorp enforcement personnel nationwide, local authorities and 300 staff from concession companies.

Their work included waste collection, street sweeping and drain cleaning.

“Ops Cegah in conjunction with New Year’s Eve 2026 ended at 3 am and was followed by cleaning operations this morning to ensure public cleanliness remains at an optimal level,” the statement added.

The public can channel cleanliness-related complaints to SWCorp via WhatsApp at 013-210 7472 or through its Public Complaints Management System.
