Driver in Anthony Joshua Nigeria crash detained by police

Police in Nigeria detain the driver of the car carrying boxer Anthony Joshua after a fatal crash that killed two of his friends.

THE driver of a car carrying British boxer Anthony Joshua has been detained by police following a fatal crash in Nigeria.

Ogun state police spokesman Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed the driver is in custody as investigations continue into Monday’s accident.

The Lexus SUV was travelling on a highway linking Lagos and Ibadan when it rammed into a stationary truck.

Joshua’s friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, died at the scene.

Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries and were treated in hospital.

“The driver… is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident,” Babaseyi told AFP.

He said the “investigation remains discreet for now” when asked about potential prosecution.

Preliminary findings by the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) indicate the vehicle was speeding and had a burst tyre before the collision.

After being discharged from hospital on Wednesday, Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home where his friends’ bodies were being prepared.

A government source suggested the victims’ remains may have been repatriated to the United Kingdom.
