Over 30 killed, several abducted in central Nigeria market raid

Bandits killed over 30 people and kidnapped several others in a raid on a central Nigerian village, marking another brutal attack in the violence-plagued region.

LAGOS: More than 30 people were killed and several others kidnapped by bandits in Nigeria’s central Niger state, local police said.

The attack occurred on Saturday when the armed group invaded Kasuwan Daji village in Kabe district.

Police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the casualties, stating “Over 30 victims lost their lives during the attack, some persons were also kidnapped.”

The assailants set a local market ablaze and looted shops for food during the raid.

Kidnap gangs, referred to locally as bandits, regularly carry out mass abductions for ransom and loot villages across Nigeria’s northwest and northcentral regions.

Niger state has been one of the hardest hit areas in recent months.

In November, armed gangs seized more than 250 students and staff from a Catholic school in the state.

Authorities announced their release in two batches weeks later without disclosing if any ransom was paid.
