Kedah to build temporary shelter for homeless
ALOR SETAR: The Kedah state government is in the process of creating a transit home or shelter house to provide temporary protection for the homeless and help them to gain better living.
The Chairman of the State Committee on Women, Community, Agriculture, and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Suraya Yaakob said that the homeless people in the state were found to be located in the city and large towns such as Sungai Petani and Langkawi and immediate action was needed to assist them.
She said that the transit home would only provide shelter to the homeless for a period of between two weeks and three months before they were assisted to have a permanent residence as well as a suitable job.
"We must acknowledge that the homeless issue is present in Kedah and there must be a way of overcoming the problem. Among them is the transit house or protection home," she told reporters here today.
She said that appropriate buildings had been identified for renovation and gazetted as transit homes in Langkawi and Alor Setar while a suitable premises was being identified in Sungai Petani. – Bernama
