PUTRAJAYA: There is no clear information to verify a report that a Malaysian family is fighting for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis).
Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this is because those involved were believed to have gone to Syria via third countries, making it difficult to trace.
"We will continue to update information on Malaysians over there. This is done via intelligence sources of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM)," he told reporters after attending the luncheon talk of the Institute of Public Security of Malaysia (Ipsom) here, yesterday.
A news portal yesterday reported that the family of four comprising the father, mother, 18 year-old daughter and 14-year-old son are among 30 Malaysians fighting for Isis.
The father and son fight alongside the extremists, the wife is believed to be a cook, while the role of the 18-year-old daughter is uncertain.
Zahid said the police (PDRM), with the cooperation of Interpol also checked the list of suspects, especially those involved in terrorist activities.
Police also found that they are no training centres for the recruitment of terrorists in the country as claimed.
A total of 252 people from 18 countries who joined militant groups including Al-Qaeda, Jemaah Islamiah, Darul Islam, Liberation Tiger of Tamil Eelam had been arrested since December 2001.
Malaysia recorded the highest number with 128 people, followed by Indonesia (33); China (19); Singapore (17); Philippines (14); Sri Lanka (12); Yemen and India (5 each), Syria and Pakistan (4 each), Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Iran (2 each) and Australia, Algeria, Jordan, Somalia and Turkey (1 each). – Bernama
