College dining hall roof collapses, no casualties

BUTTERWORTH: Students performing their prayers at the Seberang Perai Vocational College in Bukit Minyak here got the shock of their life when the roof of the dining hall suddenly collapsed on Tuesday night.

Fortunately the 8.30pm incident caused no injuries as students of the college were attending prayers.

The incident left chairs and dining tables crushed under a tangled mess of concrete and debris.

Seberang Perai Municipal Council secretary Rozali Mohamad in a text message confirmed the incident.

He said there were no casualties while the cause of the collapse was still under investigation.

“The Public Works Department (PWD) will be conducting the investigations as the building was constructed by them,” he said.

Meanwhile, a PWD sopkesman said officials were on site to scour for clues to ascertain how the roof collapsed.

He said a preliminary report was expected to be out today.

He said there were no plans to seal off the buildings surrounding the affected structure as only one part was affected.

The RM13.5 million facility was completed in October 2001 with more than 200 students said to be pursuing their vocational training at the school.

The school currently has 68 teachers who are assisted in their duties by 24 support staff.
