BUKIT MERTAJAM: A triad gang member was gunned down during a shoot-out with police early yesterday morning, mere hours after he killed a man.
Penang police chief Datuk Abd Rahim Hanafi said the “Sio Sam Ong” (Three Little Kings) gang member had earlier shot dead a 30-year-old man at an entertainment outlet in Taman Sri Rambai during a 2.30am brawl.
He said the suspect fired five rounds with a semi-automatic pistol, hitting the deceased three times on the left side of his chest and abdomen.
The man then fled to a nearby oil depot some 500m away as police launched a manhunt after being alerted.
Abd Rahim said police surrounded the depot after discovering that the 40-year-old suspect was hiding in a container at the depot. He said the suspect shot at the police after refusing to surrender.
“We returned fire and he was killed at about 5.35am,” he told a press conference yesterday at the site, with Central Seberang Perai district police chief ACP Rusli Mohd Noor.
Abd Rahim said both deceased had prior criminal records for drug cases while the gang member had records involving murder and extortion.
