Two cops charged with soliciting RM200 bribe from lorry driver

    KUANTAN: Two policemen pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to charges of soliciting and accepting RM200 bribe from a lorry driver last year.

    Lance Corporal Rosdi Mat Kaha, 46, and Constable Mohd Izaimie Ismail, 30, claimed trial to the charges before Judge Habibah Mohamed Yusof after the charges were read to them separately.

    Rosdi, from the Jaya Gading police station here, was charged with soliciting RM200 from Mohd Rustam Wahid through Mohd Izaimie at 10.30am on June 11, 2014, at the roadside along the Kuantan-Gambang route near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Paya Besar here.

    Mohd Izaimie was charged with receiving the bribe from Rustam at 2.25pm on the same day at the Warung Zakiah eatery in Jaya Gading.

    The two policemen were alleged to have solicited the bribe as an inducement for them to not take action against Rustam for driving a lorry laden with goods not covered with canvas, an offence under the Road Transport Act.
    The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Syafinas Shabudin offered bail at RM7,000, however counsel for both accused requested for a lower bail, saying that their clients were the breadwinner for their respective families.

    Lawyer Mohammed Hisham Ramdzan, representing Rosdi, said his client, who had been with the police force for 26 years, had two wives and seven children, and a widowed sister to support, and that it was his first offence.

    Meanwhile, Mohd Izaimie's counsel, Rohiza Zulkifli said her client had a wife, who was not working, and four children, aged between six years and one month, and an ailing father in Kelantan to support.

    Following which, Habibah set bail at RM4,000 in one surety for Rosdi and RM3,000 in one surety for Mohd Izaimie.

    She also set July 28 for mention. – Bernama
