KUALA LUMPUR: More than 1.2 billion people across 115 countries are expected to watch the KL City Grand Prix, to be telecast live from Aug 7 to Aug 9.
Race organiser, GT Global Race (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd president and CEO M. Arrasu described the championship, to be broadcast by ESPN and Fox Sports, as an opportunity for Kuala Lumpur to be recognised around the world.
"With these TV viewers, Kuala Lumpur will shine as an iconic race track, with the Petronas Twin Towers as the monument to represent the city.
"Through this platform, Kuala Lumpur definitely will carve its name throughout the world thus boosting the capital's economy," he told Bernama today.
The grand prix will see drivers zip through a 3.2km temporary 'Grade 3' circuit with 16 turns along streets such as Jalan P Ramlee, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Pinang.
The event is expected to see various GT race car models such as Lamborghini Super Cup, Formula Masters, Porsche Carrera Cup and Audi R8 LMS Cup, aside from a demonstration of the five best V8 supercar series teams.
The drivers will be racing on the streets of Kuala Lumpur at estimated speeds of over 200kph to be crowned champion.
Arrasu said most of the licences and procedures to legalise the event had already been taken care of.
The circuit design was approved by FIA (International Automobile Federation) and awaiting completion by the end of this month to be acknowledged as an official racing circuit, he added.
Meanwhile, the Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) and Malaysia Sports Commissioner Office have approved the relevant licences. The track arrangement for the three-day race is now 90% completed. – Bernama
